Radio frequency (RF) wireless charging technology is unique in that it uses electronic waves or radio frequencies vs. magnetic fields to charge a device. An RF transmitter transmits RF waves and a receiver embedded within a device picks them up, converts them into electricity, and powers the device. RF can power devices at a distance ranging from a few centimeters to a few meters.

There are two main categories of RF wireless charging: Near Field and Far Field

  • Far Field emits electronic waves and the transmitter (similar to a wifi router) locates the RF receiver in a defined area. As long as the device stays in that area, it charges, but it is limited on charging capacity (as some energy is lost).
  • Near-Field allows any 3D item – from a cup holder to a drawer or a box – to become a transmitter/charging station. It allows for full charging (from 0-100%) and greater spatial freedom – giving users a true “drop and charge” experience.

Key Benefits
RF offers several advantages that make it an especially exciting technology for wearables, medical devices and electronic devices.

SPATIAL FREEDOM
RF wireless charging technology offers the broadest spatial freedom – with charging zones ranging up to 15 feet. This means no matter where you place your device (within a defined charging area) it will charge, giving you the freedom to continue using the device while it powers up.

FLEXIBLE
Given that RF technology does not have the same physical limitations in size and shape as some other technologies, it can be integrated into the smallest of electronic devices, such as small wearables, hearing aids, and more.

MULTI-DEVICE CHARGING
With RF, you can charge several devices, through a defined charging zone, using a single UTx. You can also accommodate extended charging zones and different power requirements. This gives consumers a common charging source for the multiple devices in their connected lives.

NO INSTALLATION
With RF, you can transmit power throughout a defined area and charge devices in a variety of vessels (e.g., bowl, box, desktop). This eliminates the need to embed charging stations or transmitters into furniture or walls, ostensibly eliminating installation.
