Today’s lithium-ion batteries leave a lot to be desired. We constantly worry about when they’ll need to be charged and where we’ll be able to do it. The current battery industry can’t meet the demand for the electrification of everything, and that is what is driving battery innovation today. And it really breaks down to three external factors. We have energy demand increasing by 58%. We also see Lithium Ion batteries not able to meet that demand, and that final factor to break free of fossil fuel dependence. Here at Group14, our mission is to transform the battery industry with the power of silicon.
It’s really about being able to take what we have currently with lithium ion batteries and transform it into silicon batteries, which gives us incredibly increased energy density by 50% or more, extreme fast charging that reduces charging down to minutes, and that really is the step change that is going to be required to meet the energy demand and the tidal wave of electrification that is coming.
We’ve found that the most important thing that we can really help deliver is the eradication of charge anxiety, and it’s really this fear we have that the devices that we depend on will fail us when we need them the most. Whether that’s been a camera giving out in the middle of a shoot [or] a vehicle giving up the ghost before I’ve made it to the destination.
I’ve definitely been stuck in the mountains or stuck in the woods with vehicles that [the] battery just wasn’t able to make it. That’s all of the layers of how charge anxiety builds in us. By being able to eradicate charge anxiety with silicon batteries and with the power of silicon, we start to look at how we communicate with each other, how we share our lives with each other, how we get from A to B to be together. All of that starts to radically change for us in a way that just makes things a little more beautiful.
