ABB has won an order worth about $14 million from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia’s national power transmission and distribution operator.

As part of the order, ABB will supply power transformers, shunt reactors and station service transformers that will be incorporated in a substation that will enable power transmission from new combined cycle power plant being built to enhance power supplies to the capital, Riyadh, and surrounding areas in the Central Region.

“These state-of-the-art transformers and shunt reactors will help evacuate power and transmit it reliably and efficiently to meet growing demand for electricity in the region” said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s Transformers business, a part of the company’s Power Products division.

Saudi Arabia faces rising demand for electricity, driven by an increase in population and industrial growth led by the oil, gas and petrochemicals sector. The country has an ambitious plan to more than double its power-generation capacity from the present level of less than 60 gigawatts (GW).

Transformers are integral components of an electrical grid, and essential for the efficient and safe conversion of electricity between different voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,200 kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as related services and components.
