Reverion is expanding its established partnership with the South Korean technology company. At the center of the collaboration is the large-scale supply of SOFC stacks, a core component of Reverion’s highly efficient, reversible fuel cell systems.
Reverion has had SOFC stacks from Doosan Fuel Cell in commercial continuous operation at several of its customer sites since last year, following the successful completion of an initial technology validation. Throughout this period, the high electrical efficiency of over 74%, typical of Reverion systems, was consistently achieved. At the same time, the required durability was confirmed. The current partnership builds on these successful results.
Jaedong Youn, Executive Vice President of Doosan Fuel Cell, said, “This supply agreement is significant as it validates our technological capabilities and mass production capacity for SOFC core components, and enables us to create synergies with Reverion, a leading German energy technology company. We will continue to strengthen our partnership with Reverion.”
Reverion’s reversible fuel cell systems convert gas into electricity with high efficiency. During periods of surplus power, they can also switch to electrolysis mode. In addition, they can capture high-purity CO₂ instead of releasing it.
The stack supplied by Doosan Fuel Cell is based on a technology partnership with the British company Ceres Power. It operates at moderate temperatures of around 620°C, rather than the typical 800°C and above. This allows for a broader range of materials and contributes to a longer component lifespan, an advantage further reinforced by Doosan Fuel Cell’s established mass production capabilities.
“Medium- and low-temperature SOFC technology is at the core of our highly efficient fuel cell system, which we already operate commercially at multiple sites and are now producing at scale,” said Stephan Herrmann, CEO of Reverion. “Our partnership with Doosan Fuel Cell, whose stacks deliver stable performance and are manufactured at large scale, allows us to accelerate the expansion of CO₂-free, highly efficient energy supply across the European market.”
Doosan’s fuel cell stacks will be deployed at scale in Reverion power plants across Germany and Europe going forward, making a significant contribution to the energy supply of the future.
